Count House at Okel Tor Mine
Calstock, Cornwall
Okel Tor Mine is one of the best surviving 19th century tin mines nationally. It is both an Ancient Monument and World Heritage Site.
The Smithy was the workshop of the mine where miners' picks were sharpened and The Count House is the former mine captain's office. The cottages each have 1 double bedroom, 1 shower room, open-plan living room with log burning stove, sofa-bed, kitchen and dining areas. They are about 15 metres apart and screened from each other with vegetation, both are Grade II Listed and situated in an elevated position within approximately 16 acres of natural woodland and lowland heath on the tidal reaches of the River Tamar with beautiful south-facing views across the river to Devon. There are a number of interesting ruins and an abundance of flora and fauna.
The village of Calstock is a short walk away and has village shop open from 8am to 8pm and pub which serves food. The National Trusts enchanting Cotehele House is also within walking distance and the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail actually passes through Okel Tor. Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor and the sandy beaches at Whitsand Bay on the south coast are just a short drive away.
